I mean, if you take a look at Edgar Allen Poe, he went through a lot throughout his whole life, and look at the success he makes from his stories and poems. Is it what we relate to best, the troubles of our lives? Michael Jackson had a hard childhood, and he became the king of pop. Pablo Picasso was a “tortured” mind, and he made beautiful, yet eerie art work. And the same for Albert Einstein.What do you think?

yeah. i mean, im not saying you have to be tortured to write good poetry or stories, but if you dont really have any hard experiences in life, and all of your poems are happy and in a cheerful mood, i would kind of get tired of that. i think the more experiences you go through, the more you have to write about and it will be more interesting. i think its good to be able to write about a variety of things. and also, when your going through a hard time, for some people, poetry is what they turn to to express themselves and relieve their pain, so im sure many tortured minds are really great poets because they have tons of practice.
Those people simply had so much knowledge and genius in their areas, that their minds could not hold it in.
Nowadays, “tortured minds” are what sappy teenagers think they are, frankly. Look at DeviantArt. Around 90% of the users on there would probably consider themselves “tortured minds,” and yet they keep posting close-up pictures of eyeballs or an “I hate the world” poem, and thinking it’s artsy or creative.
My point is, then, that tortured minds cannot be defined, especially by the person themselves. True creativity comes from a great mind and a great heart.
