I headed up the hill, sweating all the way, trying to dart from one small wedge of shade to another along the path, and feeling pathetically grateful for even a suggestion of breeze. The library would be an oasis from the muggy, oppressive heat. The stacks would be cool and shadowy. I would emerge hours later refreshed and rejuvenated with an armload of library loot.

The library loot part was right, but the library was just as bad as outside — thick and unpleasant. I hoped that the sweat rolling off of me wouldn’t make the floors too slippery. The stacks were suffocating. Tilting my head to look at titles gave me a headache tinged with nausea. I had to give up after only 10 minutes and 3 books:

Sea of Glory – Nathaniel Philbrick. This book is about the US Exploring Expedition, which went on for a few years in the late 1830s and early 1840s. I admired Philbrick’s In The Heart of the Sea so much that I was instantly attracted to Sea of Glory.

Love and Death in the American Novel – Leslie A. Fiedler. I first saw this 1960 groundbreaking study of literature at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma when I was about 19 years old. Beguiled by that title, I examined the table of contents, then shied away from it. I clearly remember what gave me pause: Charles Brockden Brown. I didn’t know who he was. Therefore, I was not smart enough to read LADITAN. Wasn’t I a skittish reader back in the day?! Now nearly [mumble] years later, I still don’t have a good grip on who CBB was, but I now know that Fiedler will probably provide context and if it’s not there, then I’ll Google and have my answer in a moment.

Complete Novels – Dashiell Hammett. This volume includes Red Harvest, The Dain Curse, The Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man and The Glass Key. It’s going to rain like hell starting tomorrow with a typhoon, so I anticipate good times and cozy hours curled up with Dash if the electricity holds out. If not, I have a couple of flashlights.

This loot is due back on October 1. The weather should be much improved by then and I’ll come back to my library ready for a nice long visit.

Connected – James Fowler and Nicholas Christiakis
Amazing pop-social-psychology book about the power of social networks (no, just just online social networks) and the ways behaviors and health issues like obesity and smoking are essentially contagious, and full of fun facts like that if one person two degrees of separation away from your circle of friends quits smoking, you are more likely to, etc. Also cites those research studies about longevity and social life, happiness and social life. There are also great and fascinating pieces that are relevant to anyone in public health or thinking about marketing and even voting and activism.

Click – The Magic of Instant Connections
A little bit along the same lines as “Connected,” and a lot about the power of social forces in shaping us, and the influence that we can have in shaping social experiences. A lot about what makes people get along and ally with each other (proximity, exposure, environment, vulnerability etc- surprise, surprise), but some fun ideas about how to build effective teams and in-groups and practical thoughts for relationships in business, medicine, teaching, psychotherapy, and even dating.

Empire of Blue Water – Stephen Talty
I would have thought a book about pirates would be a little more exciting. Still, all told this was pretty good, though exhaustive and occasionally dry story of Captain Morgan. I particularly enjoyed the multiple references to places I’ve travelled in Latin America (ie, the Bolivian Silver mines of Potosi, the repeatedly sacked ports of Cartagena and Granada, and the ruins of Panama Viejo). Also fascinating for the sociology of Pirate values and ethics, and the book’s thesis that it was the British use of long-leash privateers that essentially brought down the Spanish Empire.

Authentic Happiness: Martin Seligman
Call me corny, but I love my scientific self-help books (cf: Tal Ben-Shahar and others). Seligman is the godfather of positive psychology, and this book is a great in-depth exploration of the big hits in positive psychology research, but better yet really breaks down research theory and ideas into practical actions. I wish I’d read the chapter on families before I’d written my book about kids, and I definitely plan to look to his chapter on happiness at work for the next book I write. Highly recommend this one.

Imperial Bedrooms: Brett Easton Ellis
Oh Brett Easton Ellis. I really loved the idea for this book- a semi-sequel to “Less Than Zero” as told by the “real” Clay, not the novelized Clay of Less Than Zero. Sounds great right? Well, it is a great idea, but then so not-well executed it couldnt help but disappoint. I felt similarly about the manic self-awareness of Lunar Park, which at least had better sex scenes. Also, really Ellis? 26.95 for what amounts to a long short story, not even qualifying as a novella. Oh well. At least the Ellis completist can read it in an afternoon.

A High Wind in Jamaica – Richard Hughes
Wow- this book was really good, unexpected and different from almost anything I’ve ever read. Plotwise, a bunch of 19th century children are kidnapped by pirates, and the book recounts the bizarre and often terrifying events with a detached, almost cheery tone. And what it does incredibly well is capture the psychology of childhood, childhood perspectives and relationships in a way that is similar to but different from Lord of the Flies. Definitely worth checking out for it’s uniqueness especially for anyone with an interest in studying childhood.

The Magicians – Lev Grossman
If you were ever a Narnia fanboy as I was, then grew into a jaded and cynical McInerney/Ellis reader, only to become earnest and sentimental again in your thirties well… this is the book for you. Yeah, I couldn’t put down this charmingly written, impossible to dislike book that is so much better than the matchbook description of “Harry Potter goes to college and finds sex, drugs and rock n’ roll.” This made those Chinese traffic jams seem too short as I blazed through it on my travels this summer. Can’t wait to read the sequel next summer on the beach.

Wind-Up Bird Chronicle – Haruki Murakami
Been meaning to read this for a long time, and finally got it started while travelling and finished a few days ago. Wow, completely fascinating and made me wish I had a deeper understanding of Japanese culture to somehow contextualize and digest all that was happening in this dream-like novel. Fundamentally, it was beautifully written, with fascinating characters, scenes that were hilarious and utterly disturbing and the whole thing deeply thought provoking about human nature, fate, war, and so many things. I don’t think any description I try to do would ever do justice, but I highly highly recommend it. Like Blood Meridian, I really wish I had a book group to discuss it with.

Blood Meridian – Cormac McCarthy
Oh my god- Have you actually read this? I’ve literally NEVER read as violent and disturbing a book, (partly because its all based on historical fact). The first few hundred pages seemed like an atrocity on every page in this rambling, beautiful story of the early settlement and conquest of the American Southwest. All in all, haunting and powerful, chliched descripters I know, but this book, even if I didn’t always enjoy reading every page, I’m very glad that I read it and experienced it, and it certainly forever changed my understanding of our country’s founding mythologies.

Fortune Cookie Chronicles – Jennifer 8 Lee
Amusing, if occasionally overly detailed account and history of Chinese food in America, and investigation of “authentic” Chinese-American food. Some really great anecdotes and history, combined with a few too many chapters on the history of the fortune cookie. Foodie fans and those with cultural interest will likely enjoy, but even I found it a bit slow at times, in spite of the great subject matter.

Another Bullshit Night in Suck City – Nick Flynn
Another one that’s been collecting dust on my shelf and I’ve been meaning to pick up and read after reading excerpts in the New Yorker years ago. Finally got the chance to tear through this on the plane to China. It was solid- not amazing, but very very good. This memoir follows the main character and his father at different stages in their lives as both descent into alcoholism, addiction and homelessness, and the son’s gradual recovery and work at a homeless shelter where his father occasionally stays. Amazing stories, decently written. By far one of the best in the pack of mediocrity that is the recovery memoir genre.

Lost on Planet China – J. Maarten Troost
Super amusing travelogue in the “this-foreign-country-is-so-crazy” genre of travel writing, making it a wee bit patronizing, but overall amusing writing and some stellar factoids and stats for the reader about modern China. And, having just visited, I can say that what the book describes is -mostly- true, though clearly the author exaggerated a bit here and there and didn’t always fully hold up though in terms of how accurate/realistic it was. Still, a fun one before travelling to China.

The Big Short – Michael Lewis
Maddening account of the behaviors of various quant financial guys who invented the credit default swap and other instruments of financial mass destruction. Not a whole lot of new territory for those who have followed “planet money” and the story with some depth, but as usual Lewis writes a colorfully engaging and informative account how things went so wrong. Worth checking out, even if you have just a passing interest in the financial crisis.

Predictably Irrational – Dan Arielly
Yes, my favorite genre- the quirky, semi-scientific popular nonfiction book that explains how the world works in unexpected ways (cf: Dan Goleman, Malcolm Gladwell, et al.). The best tidbits are facts about how we are hardwired with bugs in our cognition like overvalueing things that are “free” (ie, shipping on amazon with a 25$ purchase), facts about procrastination, and how emotion and sexual arousal change our attitudes and behaviors, and the power of expectations and “priming” on decision making and perception. Fascinating stuff. To me anyway.

I don’t know about you guys, but I love the US covers for all the books in this series. There’s so unsettling about them – I think it’s the grime and haunting eyes of the models. If you stare at them for a while, they get kind of creepy. I really like the title font used too, simple but cool.

The UK covers are interesting, because they’ve gone for a more symbolic approach. This one screams ‘tangled romance’ to me, though I do like the suggestion of blood in the background, and the grey gives it that bleak feeling you’d expect.

When it comes down to it, I’ll always choose the US covers for this series. The UK ones aren’t bad at all, they just don’t stand out to me as much. What do you think?

Jeri Smith-Ready is the author of many novels, including the adult urban fantasy WVMP series. Her first YA book, Shade, is published in the UK this week, and to celebrate its release I have a cool Q&A with Jeri herself. Thanks for your time, Jeri!

———-

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Jenny! I’m really excited to be here to celebrate SHADE’s big UK debut.

Why did you decide to branch out from adult urban fantasy and write a YA novel?

I actually didn’t decide—the story decided for me.

SHADE originally started as an idea for a world where ghosts had been proven to exist, and where some lawyers would sue on their behalf so they could find peace. But for two whole years, the idea went nowhere, because I had no main character to give it that spark of life.

Then 16-year-old Aura popped into my head, and everything clicked. THIS was the next story I had to write. Within a week, I knew that Aura would be the first of an entire generation of ghost-seers, that her boyfriend would die and become a ghost, and that a Scottish hottie would complicate things. Seeing this world through Aura’s eyes unlocked the whole story in one big flood.

In general, some of my ideas just work better with teen characters, and others with adults. Right now, I have a new urban fantasy idea that hasn’t decided which it wants to be. It depends on which character jumps out and says, “It’s all about ME!”

(P.S.: SHADE wasn’t my first YA attempt. I wrote my first between 2003 and 2006, before I even knew there was such a thing as the “young adult genre.” It wasn’t very good, but it taught me a lot—plus, it was my first fictional encounter with the fateful Liquid Stupid.)

What have you found to be the biggest difference between writing for an adult and young adult audience?

I think the biggest difference in YA, in both writing and discussing the books, is that super intense focus on characters. Which I love! When I was a teen, I wanted to be an actor or a psychologist—I was fascinated by the way people thought and felt and behaved.

Teens are the first to say when someone is behaving “out of character,” because they spend a lot of time thinking and analyzing them. They get into it the same way an actor would study a part or a psychologist would ponder a patient.

It makes sense that they’d be so smart about this stuff—most teens are full-time students, so they literally think for a living.

Not that adults don’t think or care about characters—they do. But most e-mails I get that ask questions or share insights about Aura, Logan, and Zachary are from teens. It’s fun to meet people who care about the characters as much as I do!

Shade seems to be on the more mature side of YA, and that definitely shows through in your writing. Was that a conscious decision?

Nope, it’s just the way I write. I write about things that matter to me—and things that mattered to me as a teen. I’m so thankful that I can express them in a way that feels honest and real to me, and that my readers and my publisher feel the same way. That’s all any writer can ask for.

The fact is, a lot of teens deal with the same conflicts as Aura. Maybe they can’t see ghosts, and maybe they haven’t suffered a major tragedy, but they might face big decisions about sex or drugs or alcohol, or they might wonder how they fit in with their friends or family. They might feel utterly alone.

So if a teen reads SHADE and feels like someone out there understands them, if they feel a little less alone in the world, that means everything to me.

Ghosts are an area that currently seems underused in YA. Why do you think their popularity doesn’t rival that of, say, vampires and werewolves?

Simple: you can’t have sex with a ghost. Vampires and werewolves are partly about that forbidden animal side of us—they’re all about the physical. Ghosts are everything BUT physical.

That’s part of the agony of Aura and Logan’s relationship, because they still have those yearnings. At the same time, it makes them realize that their love is more than just lust. It’s really soul deep. Besides, there are ways to be creative…. *whistles innocently*

But I think ghosts in general can be very romantic, especially in a YA novel, where there is less emphasis on sex than in an adult romance. Like vampires, ghosts are dead, so they’ve got that tortured soul thing going on. And you know that a guy who’s still attractive despite being made of air is really someone special.

Shade’s leading lady Aura is such a strong, well-rounded character. Is she inspired by anyone in particular?

Thank you! Aura isn’t based on anyone in particular, although when I was a kid, I loved astronomy. (I even married an astronomer.) So Aura’s interest in the stars—and science in general—comes from my childhood passion.

Speaking of passions, with Aura I wanted to show that smart girls can still be interested in boys. Really, really interested. Love doesn’t mean turning off your brain, and intelligence doesn’t mean turning off your heart.

If you had the hardship of choosing between leading men Logan and Zachary, who would you go for?

Arrgh, hardship! My favorite is always the one whose scene I’m writing at the moment (or whose music I’m listening to). It’s a tough choice, because Logan has the guitar and the poet’s soul, but Zachary has the accent and, y’know, a body.

Overall, I am firmly on Team-Don’t-Make-Me-Choose. Actually, I’m the captain of that team.

In the name of research, did you get the chance to visit the UK and see the Scottish Highlands?

Not recently, but I spent six months in London when I was in college. A couple friends and I traveled through Scotland for a week. It’s by far my favorite place I’ve ever been. Every year for Christmas I get a scenic Scotland calendar, so that I can remember—and dream of the day when I return. Sigh…

But if I sell the third SHADE book, I plan to travel to Newgrange in Ireland, since part of that book takes place there. When we go, I hope to hop across the water to visit Zachary’s hometown of Glasgow. All in the name of research, of course.

What can you tell us about Shade’s sequel, Shift?

I promise it will be less tear-jerking than SHADE, and that the love triangle will be resolved rather than dragged out forever. We’ll get many answers about the Shift, some of which will lead to more questions. And there’ll be music, of course—always, always music.

I’ve also had the “pleasure” of editing a video in which I appear. There are few things less pleasant than watching yourself on video. What’s even worse than when I’m talking in the video (hard to imagine that there could be something worse) is when I’m in the background when Roberta or Kate is talking. I’m always futzing with my hair or making screwy faces. What’s up with that? And what’s worse is that having this knowledge probably won’t make me do these things any less. Instead, next time I’ll probably be standing in the background, listening intently to what someone else is saying and absently mindedly futzing with my hair, and then I’ll think jeez, there I go again. But it won’t stop. C’est la vie.

Matt Love and Willy Vlautin can’t help themselves. It’s in their blood. They’re both born story tellers for whom place plays an integral role in their stories. But one has chosen the route of nonfiction writing, while the other has opted for writing fiction.

After earning his master’s degree from Lewis and Clark College in 1988, Matt set off on his teaching career. After about a decade he became dissatisfied with the life he was living and moved to the Oregon Coast to take a teaching job at Neskowin Valley School, an independent country day school. The manager of the 600-acre Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge was the father of one of his students, and he asked Matt if he would be interested in the caretaker’s position at the refuge, which offered the use of a small house in exchange for performing work at the refuge, a former dairy farm in dire need of restoration.

“The opportunity to become caretaker of this refuge was the greatest thing that ever happened to me,” Matt says. “It was the opportunity to get connected to the land, to get myself physically and mentally in shape.” It also gave him time to write. And, when not hacking lots and lots of Himalayan blackberries from the refuge property, Matt began to write, working on his own books and writing for a variety of publications.

In 2003 he launched Nestucca Spit Press. Matt has written five books, including his most recent, Gimme Refuge: The Education of a Caretaker, and has edited several, including Citadel of the Spirit: Oregon’s Sesquicentennial Anthology. In 2004 he realized that he was ready to teach again, that it was all coming together — the environmentalism, the teaching, and the writing — and since then he’s been teaching English and journalism at Newport High School. This fall he will be teaching a photography course (using cameras with film, I think!) — the first time in 20 years the class has been offered at NHS. Matt left his caretaker’s position at the refuge after losing a fight to limit public access to the grounds.

Matt was awarded the 2009 Stewart H. Holbrook Literary Legacy Award from Oregon Literary Arts for his contributions on behalf of Oregon’s literary and historical legacy.

About writing, Matt says, “Work hard, tap your passions for material, embrace solitude and put your ass to the chair are the only credos that seem to have worked for me.” Matt is all about passion, and when you read his books and columns, his passions are abundantly clear. Speaking about the new editor at the high school’s paper he says, “She seemd fired up. That’s what I like about her and other people who share this same trait…They get fired up. Whatever is not in their vocabulary.” I am pretty sure that “whatever” is not in Matt’s vocabulary either.

Willy Vlautin was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. He picked up a guitar and got into music, and at 20 became a big fan of the Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly. Kelly used Raymond Carver’s short story “So Much Water So Close to Home” to inspire the writing of lyrics for one of his albums, and Willy soon became hooked on Raymond Carver’s stories as well. Shortly after that he started writing stories himself, and he hasn’t stopped since. And his songwriting became story telling as well.

Willy moved to Portland and founded the band Richmond Fontaine in 1994. The band (whose name comes from an ex-pat hippie living in Mexico who rescued a bandmate in his pickup truck when his car broke down in the middle of the Baja California desert) has produced nine albums and a handful of live recordings and EPs. He chose Portland because he wanted to be in a “gentle” big city, and he wanted to be close enough to Reno that he could drive back in a day. After he moved here he became entranced by the Portland music scene. He also became very fond of the Portland Meadows racetrack, and spends a lot of his time writing there.

In his latest book, Lean on Pete, told through the eyes of 15-year-old Charley Thompson, a boy left to fend for himself by his wayward single father, Portland Meadows is the setting for much of the action. At the track, Charley befriends an aging quarter horse named Lean on Pete.

Willy has published two previous novels, The Motel Life and Northline — Northline comes packaged with its own soundtrack on CD. His books feature people with an edge, hardscrabble people living in the shadows, and he shows an empathy toward people whom life has beaten up and broken down. One reviewer said this about Willy’s writing: “The guys writes like the secret love child of Raymond Carver and Flannery O’Connor — just plain, true, tough, irony-free, heartrending American fiction about people living in the third-world sections of our country.” When I read Willy’s books I often want to shake his characters and say no don’t go there, because you can often see they’re heading down a bad path, but you can’t stop watching. And caring.

Willy says that “writing stories is what I do to keep my head straight, much more than caring about whether they get published.”

Like I said at the beginning, these guys can’t help it; they’re both born to write and to tell us stories. And lucky us, they’re both reading tonight at Broadway Books at 7 pm! So we hope you can join us. Come early to get a seat!

Author Scott Nicholson and Amazon are giving away two Kindles as part of his fall book blog tour from September through November, including a stop here at Megalith Books on Sept. 21. A Kindle DX will be given away through the participating blogs, and a Kindle 3 will be given away through the tour newsletter. A Pandora’s Box of free ebooks will be given away through Nicholson’s “hauntedcomputer” Twitter account.

“The digital era coincides with Act II of my career,” Nicholson said. “The Kindle has broadened many people’s horizons and given readers more power than ever, and this is an opportunity to celebrate them and the book bloggers who spread the word.”

Nicholson is author of 12 novels and three story collections, as well as four comics series and six screenplays. His paranormal thrillers “The Red Church,” “Drummer Boy” and “Speed Dating with the Dead” have all hit #1 in the Kindle “Ghosts” category.

As a bonus, if Nicholson hits the Top 100 in the U.S. or U.K. Kindle Store during the tour between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30, he will give away an extra Kindle 3 through the blogs. Sign up for the newsletter at scottsinnercircle-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to get daily links to the participating blogs. Winners will be selected at the Watauga County (NC) Public Library in December. No purchase necessary, and the contest is international. Co-sponsored by Kindle Nation Daily and Dellaster Design. Details at http://www.hauntedcomputer.com/.
